Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday said that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government would grant provisional provincial status to Gilgit-Baltistan on a priority basis as promised earlier. He said Gilgit-Baltistan will soon get a government which will establish new standards in the region.

On the occasion of the oath-taking ceremony of the new cabinet, Khan elaborated on his plans for the development of the region, Geotv reported. He was on an official visit there.

The Pakistan PM extended congratulations to his Cabinet and Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid on assuming a “difficult duty to serve the masses”.

“I know your area. I know your problems,” Imran said. “You people know better than us what projects are needed (in Gilgit),” he added. He further said that the PTI government is working to bring the Ehsaas programme as well.

The PM also made a promise of universal health insurance, saying people would be able to use it for getting treatment at any hospital up to a limit of Rs 1 million.

During Khan’s last visit on November 1, just before the election, he announced to grant provisional provincial status to Gilgit-Baltistan.

Last Thursday, massive protests were held in Gilgit-Baltistan area to protest against the rigged Assembly election. People were seen thronging the streets of the area and accusing Khan’s PTI party of winning maximum number of seats by rigging the recently held polls.

PTI won a majority of the 23 Assembly seats in 2020 Gilgit-Baltistan election. The third legislative assembly elections were held on November 15 amidst tight security. The Pakistan government had deployed over 15,000 security personnel from Gilgit-Baltistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and Balochistan at the polling stations.
