Pallavi Sharma, the wife of Colonel Ashutosh Sharma, who laid down his life while fighting terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir recently, scattered his ashes at the war memorial of South West Army Command in Jaipur Friday morning. She did it as a special gesture towards her husband who died fighting the enemies of the nation earlier this month.
Colonel Sharma, who was the commanding officer of Indian Army’s 21 Rashtriya Rifles, was among five security forces personnel martyred during an encounter with terrorists in Chanjmulla area of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
On Tuesday, the state of Rajasthan honoured the fallen jawan as Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and slain soldier’s family members performed a wreath-laying ceremony and paid their last respects at 61 Cavalry location, Jaipur Military Station.
Speaking about her husband’s death, Pallavi earlier said she will not shed tears for her husband, who died a martyr. “I am a proud wife as my husband sacrificed his life while protecting the nation. Will not shed tears on his martyrdom. It is an honour to be sacrificed for the country,” she had said.
Colonel Sharma, a gallantry awardee, during his lifetime, was part of numerous counter-terror operations in the troubled northern Union Territory (UT).
As per his brother Piush Sharma, who works at a pharma company in Jaipur, it was Colonel Sharmas’ dream as a child to join the Indian Army which he fulfilled after many attempts.

Other than Colonel Sharma, one major, two Army soliders and one J&K police personnel were also killed during the operation on May 2. Colonel Ashutosh Sharma, Major Anuj Sood, rifleman Naik Rajesh, Lance Naik Dinesh, and J&K police officer Shakeel Qazi were killed on the ill-fated day.
The terrorists had captured and held a few civilians as hostages in a house in the south Kashmir district. Based on intelligence inputs, a joint operation was conducted and the security personnel were met with stiff resistance from terrorists, the army said.
“Based on the intelligence input that terrorists were taking the civilian inmates of a house in Changimulla, Handwara of Kupwara district hostage, a joint operation was launched by Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police. A team comprising five Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel entered the target area occupied by the terrorists to evacuate the civilians,” said an Army spokesperson.
“During the process, the team was subjected to heavy volume of fire by the terrorists. In the ensuing firefight two terrorists were eliminated and the team of five army and J&K personnel comprising two Army officers, two Army soldiers and one J&K Police Sub Inspector attained martyrdom.” the spokesperson added.
