BJP Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy today sought clarification from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) saying that delegates who attended Nizamuddin conference had come from countries where Tablighi Jamaat is banned.
Taking to Twitter, Swamy said that Tablighi Jamaat has been banned in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. In 2013, a court in Astana banned the international Islamic group Tablighi Jamaat with Kazakhstan’s Prosecutor-General’s Office announcing that “the group had been designated as extremist and all its activities in Kazakhstan were now considered illegal.”
Banned in Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan
Tablighi Jamaat, a religious movement founded in India in 1926, has been banned in Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
Last year in Tajikistan, several members of the group were sentenced to prison terms of between three and five years.
Meanwhile, the government has decided not to issue a tourist visa to any foreigner who wants to visit India and take part in Tablighi activities.
2,100 foreigners have come to India since January 1
The decision was taken after it was found that about 2,100 foreigners have come to India since January 1 and indulged in Tablighi activities in different parts of the country.
The MEA has been advised that missions may be requested to refrain from granting tourist visa to such foreigner who is likely to use it for Tablighi activities, PTI said.
Many of the people who attended the Jamaat have tested coronavirus positive with Nizamuddin area becoming the hotspot of COVID-19.
Foreigners from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Nepal, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Kyrgyzstan come for Tablighi activities.
The Home Ministry said that while approximately 824 of them, as on March 21, dispersed to different parts of the country, 216 of them were staying at Nizamuddin Markaz.
