Hours after the Jammu and Kashmir administration revoked the Public Safety Act (PSA) against Omar Abdullah and ended his almost eight-month detention, the former chief minister on Tuesday took to Twitter to share a few pictures and thank those who made his release possible.
Omar Abdullah and two other ex-J&K CMs – his father Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti – were detained ahead of the revocation of Article 370 and bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories (UTs) on August 5, 2019. Abdullah, who turned 50 on March 10, was kept under detention at the state guesthouse Hari Niwas, located only a few hundred metres from his official residence.
In a series of tweets, the National Conference leader mentioned about the ongoing battle against coronavirus while asserting that he would do everything to assist the authorities in overcoming this challenge.
At a time when a number of states across the country are facing lockdown to avert COVID-19 spread, Abdullah tweeted: “On a lighter note if anyone wants tips on surviving quarantine or a lock down I have months of experience at my disposal, perhaps a blog is in order.”
While posting a picture of himself sporting a long white beard and that of the order issued by Home Secretary Shaleen Kabra revoking the PSA against him, Abdullah wrote: “232 days after my detention today I finally left Hari Niwas. It’s a very different world today to the one that existed on 5th August 2019.”
In another tweet, he posted a picture of his parents, captioning: “Had lunch with my mum & dad for the first time in almost 8 months. I can’t remember a better meal even though I’ve been in a bit of a daze & don’t remember what I ate”.
Abdullah’s mother was the first person to arrive at Hari Niwas after news surfaced that her son was about to be freed.He thanked senior advocates Kapil Sibal, Gopal Sankaranarayanan and Shariq Reyaz and their legal teams for “taking the fight against my unjust PSA detention to the SC. Thank you to my baby sister Sara for filing the petition to have me freed”.
Abdullah further thanked his party members “for staying united & staying strong. We have a long & difficult road ahead of us but together we will ensure J&K sees better days”.
Omar Abdullah’s father and former J&K CM Farooq Abdullah was also charged under the PSA. He was freed on March 13 after 221 days in detention. PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti’s detention is not over yet.
